MEET THE AUTHOR
Rivera L. Peoples is a young ambitious visionary with the heart of a fighter. He was born June 4th, 1990 in Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in poverty-stricken neighborhoods with drug-addicted and incarcerated parents. He has six siblings, at which he is 5th in birth order. Hard times and survival were normal, and that contributed to his fighter and determined mindset. He has spent the better part of his adulthood and development incarcerated, but that has not diminished his successes. Rivera is one of countless Black men in America whose life circumstances have brought them into the criminal legal system. He is an avid learner and researcher that continues to acquire knowledge and build his awareness of the processes and systems around him. He has obtained his paralegal certificate, authored his first work, Power vs. Poverty: Following the Money to Reveal the Scheme of Mass Incarceration, and is currently constructing a non-profit "Time to Have a Heart." Of his greatest accomplishments are fathering his three children, Kameron, Skylar, and Ke’Zavier.
Rivera goal is to inspire action not only his community but the entire judicial justice system.
"For the past 15 years I've been fighting for my life, my rights,” “While I’m fighting for mine, I’m fighting for others in my community who are experiencing similar issues.” - Rivera L. Peoples

THOUGHT PHILOSOPHY
The unfortunate truth of my circumstances are that little black boys and girls are being funneled into systems and predicaments just like mine. I fight daily to change the erroneous violations of my constitutional rights, but it is truly my life’s purpose to detour as many inner-city kids from getting entangled in these systems of oppression as possible. The heart of my book is a resource to many within the African-American community to recognize that millions of lives and homes are negatively and generationally impacted by the system of mass incarceration. However, recognition and awareness is only part of the whole picture. I want to inspire action to change within my community. We must do our part to ensure and influence successive generations from being sacrificial lambs to the slaughter and business of mass incarceration.
POWER VS. POVERTY
FOLLOWING THE MONEY TO REVEAL AMERICA'S MASS INCARCERATION SCHEME
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Following the money to reveal the scheme of mass incarceration, I wrote Power vs. Poverty to be used as a tool to fight back against the mass injustice of a system that has hidden behind the word Justice far too long. Instead of justice and corrections, this system has massively incarcerated, oppressed and consumed many generations of people that look like me. In today's America, 1 and every 3 black boys born can expect to go to prison in his lifetime. Power vs. Poverty is my true, first hand account of being a 18 year old defendant in poverty, facing capitol charges up against an outdated, over budgeting, and underperforming criminal justice system that politicians/ lobbyists and businessman has used to scam the American tax payers out of 80+ Billion dollars a year on the idea of Corrections. In today's information age, statistics is one thing, but Power vs. Poverty is more than just analytics and buzz words, its a vivid description of mass incarceration not from the classroom perspective but actually from inside the belly of the beast, giving readers a birds eye view of the mess of mass incarceration.
